Sarah Anthony Makes History as First African American Woman to Serve in Michigan’s 68th House Distri

Ingham County Commissioner Sarah Anthony was sworn in to the Michigan House of Representatives this week, making her the first African American woman to serve in Lansing’s 68th district.

“After nearly a year of campaigning, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and eager to get to work for the Lansing community as State Representative,” Rep. Anthony said. “Our win is a huge step toward the larger goal of creating and promoting gender and racial diversity in politics. Democracy doesn’t work unless we all have a seat at the table and I’m committed to making sure every person has their voice heard.”

Filling the vacant seat of Lansing Mayor Andy Schor during the Legislature’s “Lame Duck” session, Rep. Anthony will get to work immediately, fighting for what all Michiganders deserve: a strong education system, jobs with fair wages, economic equality, affordable health care, and safe schools and communities.

“The 68th district is officially open for business and I’ll be working hard every single day to ensure that regardless of zip code, race, age, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status, we all have an equal and fair shot at success here in Michigan,” Rep. Anthony said.

Rep. Anthony’s office is located in the Anderson House Office Building at 124 N.Capitol Ave., and constituents are encouraged to stop by between the hours of 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
